Source:  Northeastern United States.
Color:  Wide ring of yellowish-white sapwood with small reddish-brown heartwood in second growth strands. Old growth strands yield wood with less sapwood.
Pattern:  Ranges clear to knotty.
Characteristics:  Heavy; strong; stiff; hard.
Uses:  Extensively in construction, occasionally in furniture and plywood.
Availability:  Readily available as veneer (plain sliced); readily available as lumber.
